Pennsylvania’s statewide unemployment rate held steady at 7;4 percent in May the same rate it was in April, the state the state Department of Labor and Industry said this afternoon. That’s lower than the national rate, which ticked upward from 8.1 percent in April to 8,2 percent in May, the agency said.

The state’s seasonally adjusted labor force, of those looking for work, increased by 23,000 in May, to 6.45 million. In all, 475,000 state residents were unemployed in May, the same number as in April.
Resident employment was 5.97 million, up 23,000 from April, and 68,000 people higher than May 2011 levels, the agency said.
