Backyard chicken regulation has been on the agendas of many local municipalities over the past few years as residents have developed interest in keeping the birds.
Since this interest has continued to grow, Blair and Diana Malcom — who advocated for passing State College’s ordinance in 2008 — have put together an OLLI class for those who would like to learn more about keeping their own feathered friends.

These ordinances regulate the size of runs, whether it’s totally enclosed or not, specs for the coop (when finished it will be inspected by a zoning officer — for a “small” administrative fee), number of chickens allowed and whether you can have roosters or not! Also, they determine whether you can slaughter your own chickens!!
