Greece’s Forumula for Economic Decline

The President and his team have been blaming “European headwinds” for some of the U.S. economy’s woes. But the truth is that the policies pursued by Washington and Athens are frighteningly similar—and the outcomes are not good for either country. Both countries are in need of comprehensive fiscal reforms, yet their leaders have avoided the tough decisions in favor of bailouts and political posturing.

In yesterday’s election, political parties supporting Greece’s bailout secured a narrow victory, causing Europe and world markets to breathe a temporary sigh of relief. The parties must now form a coalition government, despite continued protests from the radical party that sought to throw out the terms of the bailout assistance—which could have led Greece out of the euro currency. At 22 percent unemployment, Greek voters expressed disappointment with their limited options.

The Greek crisis was foreshadowed in this year’s Heritage Foundation/Wall Street Journal Index of Economic Freedom, with Greece registering the largest decline in economic freedom of any country in the world. Its economy is rated “mostly unfree,” and it has the fifth-lowest economic freedom score in Europe, beating only Russia and three former Soviet republics.

EU Air Carbon Tax

As Senate Republicans and Democrats Wednesday slammed a European Union directive charging all airlines that enter European airspace for carbon emissions, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) blamed the dispute over the cap-and-trade system on America’s failure to support global climate change initiatives.

“If this wasn’t so sad you might laugh at what’s going on here, because it really represents a failure over 20-plus years of people to be serious about an issue,” Kerry said during a Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee hearing on the European emissions trading scheme (ETS).

“The truth is we dragged our feet. The United States of America has been one of the principal foot-draggers in this entire [emissions control] effort.”

Europe Warns US

European leaders are calling on the U.S. to be sure and steer clear of the “fiscal cliff” coming at the end of the year, for the good of the global economy.

While European nations are grappling with a debt crisis on their own continent, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy are also concerned about fiscal struggles afflicting other nations, in particular the United States and Japan.

In a letter sent to all members of the European Union, the two called for the others to adopt “credible medium-term fiscal consolidation plans.” The letter came in advance of a June meeting of the G20 powers in Mexico.

“Whilst we are firmly focused on playing our part, at Los Cabos all other G20 partners should also recognise their responsibilities in building a sustainable recovery,” they wrote. “In this regard, the EU should urge the US and Japan to implement credible medium-term fiscal consolidation plans, in particular to avoid the ‘fiscal cliff’ in the US at the end of the year.”
