Pricing and security dominated the testimony at the congressional hearing held by U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan, R-7, of Upper Darby, at Neumann University to explore the effect of the regional refinery closures.
“As we all well know at the local level, the decline of domestic regional refining in our nation is alarming,” Meehan said. “The economic impact of these closures is obvious and devastating … A major disruption could cause serious issues for our nation and our security.”
In September, ConocoPhillips idled its Trainer facility and eliminated its work force in January. In December, Sunoco Inc. idled its Marcus Hook facility and terminated most of its employees last month.
Company officials have said the Philadelphia refinery would be shut by July if a new owner hasn’t been found.
