House Republican lawmakers are calling on the IRS to stop harassing Tea Party groups across the country.

Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), along with more than 60 House Republicans, sent a letter to IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman detailing their concerns that the agency routinely discriminates against Tea Party groups. They also seek an explanation why the agency has yet to approve the tax-exempt status of the NORCAL Tea Party Patriots, located in McClintock’s district.

McClintock said the IRS demanded complete records of every oral statement ever provided by any member of the NORCAL Tea Party Patriots, transcripts of the group’s meetings for the past two years and “excessively long questionnaires all to be returned within unreasonably short time periods.”

The letter, obtained by The Hill, states, “These demands go well beyond good-faith due diligence and appear designed to be logistically and financially impossible to comply with.”

McClintock challenged the IRS to show the lawfulness of the requests and forgo any further “excessive information demands.”
