President Barack Obama defended his earlier comments that small business owners did not build their companies and rather owe it to government infrastructure.
“Any business owner – small or large – they’ll tell you what also helps them succeed alongside their hard work, their initiative, their great ideas, is the ability to hire workers with the right skills and the right education,” Obama said Tuesday, speaking to campaign contributors at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Ore. “What helps them succeed is the ability to ship and sell their products on new roads and bridges and ports and wireless networks.”
At a July 13 campaign rally in Roanoke, Va., Obama said, “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges.”
