Two Northampton County farms are among nearly 20 in the state that will be protected from development under a Department of Agriculture program, the department announced this afternoon.

The Pennsylvania Agriculture Land Preservation Board said Joel and Shirley Jacobson’s 30-acre crop farm in Moore Township and Joseph and John Scencsits 87.35-acre crop farm in East Allen Township will both be preserved.

The program allows state, county and local governments to purchase conservation easements on the farmland. The owners get the purchase money and keep their property. However, if they eventually sell the land, the new owners would not be able to develop it.
