Individuals and industry groups on both sides of the argument continue to weigh in on bipartisan legislation on Capitol Hill involving ethanol policy.
The two bills are from Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-Virginia). The RFS Elimination Act would eliminate the Renewable Fuel Standard and make ethanol compete in a free market. Meanwhile, the RFS Reform Act eliminates corn-based ethanol requirements and caps the amount of ethanol that can be blended into conventional gasoline at 10 percent, rather than the 15 percent that the EPA has approved.
In introducing the measures, the GOP lawmaker stated the government’s creation of “an artificial market” for the ethanol industry – through the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) – “has quite frankly triggered a domino effect that is hurting American consumers, energy producers, livestock producers, food manufacturers, and retailers.”
